Terms & conditions

Acceptance

These terms (the “Terms”) are the contract between you and Taarof for use of the marketing website at taarof.app, the Taarof mobile application, the pre-launch waitlist promotion, the referral programme, and the affiliate voucher programme (together, the “Service”).

By joining the waitlist, creating a Taarof account, or otherwise using the Service, you confirm that you have read these Terms and that you accept them. If you don't accept them, please don't use the Service.

A separate privacy notice describes how we process your personal data. It is incorporated into these Terms by reference.

Who we are

Taarof is in the process of being registered as an entity in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. Until that registration completes at the Registre de Commerce et des Sociétés (RCS Luxembourg), the founder Frederik Frieg acts as the operator of the Service in a personal capacity. These Terms will be updated with the full entity name and RCS number in the same change in which they are issued.

[TO CONFIRM: Full registered entity name, registered address, and RCS Luxembourg number — to be inserted once entity registration completes.]

You can reach us at hello@taarof.app for anything to do with the Service, or at legal@taarof.app for anything to do with these Terms.

What Taarof is

Taarof lets you keep a personal record of the dishes you eat at restaurants, hotels, and cafés — what you ordered, where, how it was, and what you'd order again. We help you discover where to find a dish you remember loving, and what other diners thought of it.

The Service is delivered through a website and a mobile app, both backed by the same account. Restaurants and other venues may appear in the app because someone added them or because the team imported them from a public source. That listing does not imply any endorsement or partnership unless we say so explicitly on the page.

Some features depend on third-party services (for example, maps and place data). When those third parties are unavailable, the corresponding parts of Taarof may also be unavailable. We try to design around outages but cannot promise uninterrupted service.

Eligibility and accounts

You must be at least sixteen years old to use the Service. If your country sets a higher minimum age for online services without parental consent, that higher minimum applies to you.

You may hold one account. You agree to give accurate information when you sign up and to keep it accurate. You are responsible for what happens under your account, including for keeping your sign-in method (magic-link email or single-sign-on) safe. If you suspect someone else has accessed your account, write to hello@taarof.app so we can lock it.

You may close your account at any time from inside the app. Closing your account removes your personal data on the schedule described in the privacy notice. Some content you contributed to community surfaces (for example, a restaurant or dish entry that other diners have used) may remain in an anonymised form so the community record isn't broken.

Acceptable use

Use the Service like a polite guest at a table. In particular, do not:

  • scrape or automate access to the Service beyond the public APIs we document;
  • upload content you don't have the right to share, or content that infringes anyone else's intellectual property, privacy, or reputation;
  • impersonate a restaurant, hotel, person, or brand you are not authorised to represent;
  • try to break, probe, or circumvent the security of the Service or anyone else's account;
  • use the Service to harass, threaten, or harm other diners, restaurants, or staff;
  • misuse the waitlist or referral programme — see the relevant sections below.

If we believe you've materially breached these rules, we may suspend or close your account. We give you a chance to explain first unless waiting would cause harm.

The content you contribute

Photos, scores, written notes, and any other material you upload to Taarof remain yours. You grant us a non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free licence to host, copy, transmit, format, and display that content for the limited purpose of operating the Service for you — including showing your own content back to you, backing it up, and (where you've made it public or community-visible) showing it to other diners who'd reasonably benefit.

This licence lasts as long as the content is in the Service. When you delete a meal log, the corresponding content is removed; the licence for that content ends at the same time, subject to short routine backup retention described in the privacy notice.

You confirm that you have the rights to share what you upload — your own photos, your own notes — and that the content does not infringe anyone else's rights.

Public reviews and community safety

Reviews are public by default so other diners can discover good dishes, and you control the visibility of each review — you can keep one private, make a public one private again, or change the default for new reviews in the app's settings. When a review is public, your handle, display name, avatar, score, notes, and any photo you attach appear on the dish's page.

Public content is a shared space, so it carries a content policy on top of the acceptable-use rules above. Do not post content that is abusive, harassing, hateful, threatening, illegal, infringing, deceptive, or that is spam, advertising, or otherwise off-topic. Reviews should reflect a genuine experience.

You keep ownership of what you post — the licence in The content you contribute above is what lets us display it. You can report a review or block another diner from inside the app; blocking hides that person's reviews from you. We may remove content that breaches this policy, and we may suspend or close accounts that repeatedly or seriously breach it, as described in Suspension and termination below.

Pre-launch waitlist promotion

Anyone with a valid email can join the Taarof waitlist on the marketing site before public launch. This section governs the one-month-premium promotion attached to that waitlist.

What you get

One (1) calendar month of Taarof premium, granted automatically once you create an account in the Taarof app after launch using the same email address you signed up with on the waitlist. No code, no card required to redeem.

Eligibility

  • you joined the waitlist before the public launch date,
  • the email you signed up with is your own and reaches you, and
  • you create exactly one Taarof account using that email within a redemption window of ninety (90) days from launch.

Multiple signups from the same person, role accounts, disposable email providers, and signups created in bulk for resale do not qualify and may be removed.

What “premium” covers

Premium gives you access to the paid tier of features in the Taarof app for the duration of the grant. The current scope of premium features is shown inside the app and may change as the product evolves; we will not narrow the scope materially during the duration of a grant already in progress.

Cash value

The free month has no cash value, cannot be exchanged for money or credit, and cannot be transferred to another person. We may withdraw or revoke the grant for fraud, abuse, or a material breach of these Terms, and we may modify or end the promotion at any time before you have redeemed it — already-granted months remain valid for their stated duration.

Referral programme

The referral programme is available to registered Taarof users after public launch. It is separate from the waitlist promotion. The two can stack — a waitlist redeemer can still earn referral months on top — but they are governed by different sections of these Terms.

Who can refer

Any registered Taarof user with an active account. Suspended or closed accounts cannot generate or receive referral rewards.

Activation

A referral is “activated” — and the reward is granted — only when all of the following are true:

  • the referee creates a new Taarof account using the referrer's link,
  • the referee is genuinely a different person from the referrer (we look for the obvious signals — device fingerprints, payment methods, IP overlap — and we use them to spot self-referral, not to surveil anyone in particular),
  • the referee logs at least three dish entries at two or more different restaurants, and
  • the above happens within fourteen (14) days of the referee's account creation.

Reward

One (1) calendar month of Taarof premium per activated referee, added to the referrer's existing premium-until date (or starting at the time of grant if the referrer wasn't currently premium). No money is paid out. The reward has no cash value and cannot be transferred.

Anti-abuse

Self-referral, fake referees, bulk account creation, and other attempts to game the programme are prohibited. We may withhold or revoke a reward, suspend the programme for a specific account, or close the account entirely if we reasonably conclude the rules were broken. We give you the chance to explain first unless waiting would cause harm.

Changing or ending the programme

We may change the reward amount, the activation criteria, or end the programme at any time. Changes apply to referrals that begin after the change is published; rewards already granted are not retroactively reduced.

Affiliate voucher programme

A business — typically a restaurant — can generate an affiliate link and QR code for its venue and display it (for example, a table poster). This section governs the voucher a venue can earn through that link. It is separate from, and may stack with, the user referral programme above.

Who can participate

A signed-in Taarof user who has claimed the venue in the app. A venue's affiliate account must be approved by us before its link earns anything; we may decline or suspend an account at our discretion, including where we can't reasonably confirm the person represents the venue.

Activation

A referred diner “activates” — and the venue earns one voucher — only when all of the following are true:

  • the diner is new to Taarof and creates their account after arriving through the venue's affiliate link,
  • the diner is genuinely a different person from the venue's own account (we look for the obvious self-referral signals and act on them),
  • the diner logs at least three dish entries at two or more different restaurants, and
  • the above happens within fourteen (14) days of the diner's account creation.

The reward

A €5 non-binding promotional voucher per activated diner, recorded to the venue's balance in the app. It has no cash value, is not redeemable for money or credit, is not transferable, and no payout is made. It is a discretionary thank-you: Taarof grants, withholds, changes, or withdraws it at its sole discretion, and no voucher creates any debt, entitlement, or obligation owed to the venue. Every earned voucher is held for review before it counts, and may be voided for abuse.

The diner's data

A diner who joins through an affiliate link consents to Taarof emailing them about the service. We tell the venue only that a sign-up came from their link, as an aggregate count — we never share the diner's email or identity with the venue. See the privacy notice.

Anti-abuse

Self-referral, fake diners, bulk or incentivised sign-ups, and other attempts to game the programme are prohibited. We may withhold or void a voucher, suspend a venue's affiliate account, or remove it entirely if we reasonably conclude the rules were broken.

Changing or ending the programme

We may change the voucher amount, the activation criteria, the way (if any) vouchers are ever redeemed, or end the programme at any time.

[TO CONFIRM: The VAT and accounting treatment of a business-facing promotional voucher; whether vouchers are ever convertible into anything and, if so, the identity checks (KYC) that would apply; and the Luxembourg entity name — to be inserted before the programme is offered publicly. This section is engineering scaffolding and is owed a legal review.]

Premium subscription

Premium will be available as a paid subscription once Taarof launches its paid tier. The scope of features, the price, and the billing cadence (monthly, annual) will be displayed in the app at the point of purchase and confirmed before any charge is taken.

You can cancel a paid premium subscription at any time. Cancellation stops future charges; it does not refund the current billing period unless the law requires a refund. If you cancel during a free month earned from the waitlist or a referral, the free month continues to run until it expires — only a paid auto-renewal is stopped.

[TO CONFIRM: Final premium feature scope, price, billing cadence, and refund policy — to be inserted once the paid tier launches and the payment provider is wired.]

Suspension and termination

We may suspend or close your account if you materially breach these Terms (including the acceptable-use rules and the anti-abuse rules in the waitlist and referral sections), if we reasonably suspect fraud or risk to other users, or if continuing the account would expose us to legal risk we cannot otherwise mitigate.

Where it is safe to do so, we'll tell you why and give you a chance to fix the issue. Where it isn't, we'll lock the account first and explain after. You can write to hello@taarof.app to appeal.

You can close your account at any time from inside the app — see Eligibility and accounts above.

Disclaimers and liability

We provide the Service with reasonable care. Within the limits of the law, the Service is provided “as is” — we don't promise it will be uninterrupted, error-free, or that it will identify every dish or every restaurant correctly. Suggestions, similar-dish matches, and any other algorithmic output are aids, not advice.

Nothing in these Terms limits any liability that cannot be limited under your local law — for example, liability for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, for fraud, or under any non-waivable consumer-protection right. Subject to that, our total aggregate liability to you under or in connection with these Terms is limited to the amount you have paid us for the Service in the twelve months before the event giving rise to the liability, or one hundred euros (€100), whichever is greater.

We are not liable to you for indirect or consequential losses, loss of profits, or losses that we couldn't have reasonably foreseen at the time you accepted these Terms.

Your responsibility for what you do

You're responsible for what you upload and what you do through the Service. If a third party makes a claim against us because of content you contributed or because you broke these Terms, we may ask you to cover the costs we reasonably incur defending it. We won't ask you to cover claims that we caused ourselves through our own negligence or breach.

Changes to these terms

We update these Terms from time to time. The date at the top of the page tells you when we last changed them.

If the change is material — different commitments around the waitlist or referral programme, a new fee, anything that affects your rights — we will notify you in advance, either by email or in-product, and give you a meaningful chance to read the change before it takes effect. Continuing to use the Service after the effective date means you accept the change. If you don't accept it, you can close your account.

Governing law and jurisdiction

These Terms are governed by the law of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, without regard to its conflict-of-laws rules. You and we agree that the courts of Luxembourg City have non-exclusive jurisdiction over any dispute under these Terms.

If you are a consumer in the EU, you also keep the protection of the mandatory laws of the country where you live, and you can bring claims in the courts there. The European Commission provides an online dispute-resolution platform at ec.europa.eu/consumers/odr.
